Avviso ai Naviganti (Notice to Mariners) is a project about the Mediterranean and the migration flows toward Europe. It is a mapping of all the Mediterranean coasts, incorporating data related to migrant incidents in the represented areas, from the coasts of Turkey to the Canary Islands, which, although outside the Mediterranean, have always been one of the gateways to Europe. The nautical charts, which are the main objects of the research, are copied in the part that only relates to the figures of sea depths—the primary representation of the sea in the chart—thus removing all information about land, routes, and other elements that are not just the sea space. To these depth figures, the numbers of migrant deaths from incidents are added in red, just as updates to nautical charts in mariner notices are typically in red. Matvejević speaks of the Mediterranean as a world unto itself, a sea surrounded by land and land bathed by the sea at the same time, where the Mediterranean environment has formed through trade, the movements of cultures that have crossed from one shore to the other, but perhaps also in those cultures that the opposite shores have never been able to reach.
