Maps, Visions, and Stories for Imagined Futures is a walk leading to the Fornace Smorlesi in Valle Cascia (MC), guided by Cesare Giustozzi, Massimo Luchetti and Roberto Sdrubolini, former employees of the brick factory—key figures in the history of the site—and marks the first “step” in a project aimed at redefining the geography of Valle Cascia.
If it’s true that bricks are the primary elements in the construction of both architectural spaces and community spaces, then it’s equally true that from this very furnace, those bricks set off to reach all corners of Italy and the world, contributing to the shaping of an urban geography whose material origin lies in the clay, transformed into brick right here. The stories of those who worked in the furnace will thus become the first foundational elements of a project that aims to chart an expanded geography of the town: a symbolic map that begins in Valle Cascia and branches out into the places built with Smorlesi bricks. A geography that is not only physical, but also made up of stories, faces, and connections that continue to live on in the places and buildings created with these bricks.
